Different Types of Gutters and How to Choose the Right Fit for Your Home - Pro-Quality Contractors

Different Types of Gutters and How to Choose the Right Fit for Your Home

Melting snow and excessive rain can really give your gutters a workout. If you have noticed some damage and are thinking of replacing them or looking to install some on a new home, there are several different types to choose from.

Each will have its advantages, so it will depend on what you are looking for, your budget, and your climate. Let’s take a closer look at the types of gutters and which ones will be the best choice for your home.

Vinyl Gutters

For those of you in milder climates, these vinyl gutters are very popular. They are lightweight and snap together very easily and they are very easy to install. They are also very inexpensive, which makes them very appealing, indeed.

They are not great for those who cope with cold climates. They can become brittle and crack, but they are ideal for those in warmer climates who are up for DIY gutters. They won’t rust or corrode.

Aluminum Gutters

Aluminum gutters are also very popular. These are perfect for any climate and won’t rust. These are also lightweight and are easy to put together and install. They can be painted, and they can be custom made to fit perfectly on your home, without seams.

They are also perfect for those watching their budget. They can be somewhat soft, and get damaged easily. There are different grades, however, if you choose something a bit heavier.

Steel and Stainless Steel Gutters

Steel gutters are much sturdier than the other types mentioned so far but are still not going to break the bank. They will, however, rust. They are available in different grades of steel.

If you take care of them, they will still last a long time, but they require more maintenance than other types. They are probably the most popular type of gutters used.

Stainless steel gutters are almost indestructible. They will last for as long as the house does. They do come with a hefty price tag, however. They won’t rust or corrode, or be easily damaged.

Copper Gutters

Copper gutters are the top of the line when it comes to rain gutters. They look beautiful if that is something you are worried about. They will last forever, not rust nor corrode and they top the price list as well.

Wooden Gutters

With all the cheaper and more durable materials available now, wood is rarely used. They look great, but they require maintenance and will not be cheap. If you are going for the rustic, authentic look, be prepared to pay a high price for them.

How to make a decision on which gutter type is the best fit for you

Rain gutters play an important role in maintaining your home. They keep the moisture from causing damage to your home and the foundation. Choosing the right materials will ultimately come down to your climate, your budget, and where you live.

Perhaps you are looking to upgrade the home to sell or just make improvements. Getting stronger materials that require less work might be ideal for those who are retired or don’t want to fuss with them each year.

There may be regulations in place if you live in a historical area or if there is a lot of rainfall where you live. Most of us are led by budget, so there are certainly options available.

If you want to leave them as they are or if you will want to paint them to match the home is also something to consider. It is a good idea to ask your neighbors to see what they feel works best and ask the professional who will be installing them.
